Schmitt, Beverly Ann, age 67, of Watkins, passed away unexpectedly on September 19, 2015. Survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Donald, and their three children and their spouses: Jennifer and Joel O'Brien, Julie and Tony Leither, and Eric and Kaila Schmitt; as well as her eight adoring grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, David Bates; sisters, Patricia (Roger) Hennen, Mary Lawler, and Debra Bates; and brother-in-law, David Pauly. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Esther Pauly, and brother-in-law, Roger Lawler.

Bev was God's angel on earth, ministering to His people through the thoughtful things she did every day. Her ministry was as a writer, mailing personalized cards and notes of encouragement to friends and family from near and far; those serving our country, the shut-ins, the lonely, and those facing the end of their earthly journey. She made each person know that they were loved, appreciated and valued, and so important to the Heavenly Father. She was compassionate to all, generously loving those entrusted to her care until her last breath. She was the energetic heart and soul of her family, always planning ways to enjoy God's beautiful creation together. She was completely devoted to her family and her friends. Among her many loves in life, she enjoyed traveling and caring for her beautiful flower garden. Bev loved to laugh and found joy in almost everything. She was our animated storyteller, our relentless advocate, our exuberant cheerleader. Anyone who met her became a lifelong friend. She was our prayer warrior who stormed Heaven for us and whose deep faith in God was her source of strength on earth. She lived with full confidence and belief in the mercy and grace of her Lord and Savior. Bev worked as hard as she played, using every earthly moment she was given to the fullest. Her warmth, her beauty, her love, and her faith will be what she is remembered by all those who knew her. She loved life and lived it passionately.

Born on August 17, 1948, to John and Hildegard (Boeckmann) Bates of Watkins, Bev graduated from St. Boniface High School in Cold Spring, earning her bachelor's degree in elementary education from the College of St. Benedict in 1971 and her master's degree from St. Cloud State University in 1980. She educated kindergarteners, second-graders and fourth-graders for more than 36 years, and served on numerous educational boards and committees during that time, receiving many accolades and awards for her teaching and advocacy. She is fondly remembered by her students and fellow faculty members. In retirement, Bev was a caregiver to her eight grandchildren, the genuine loves of her life: Lauren, Lily, Carter, Claire, Crosby, Avery, Gavin and Thatcher. Nana Bev poured her heart and soul into their lives, never missing an opportunity to watch them grow, and encouraging them each and every step of the way. They could count on her presence at their games, concerts and school functions, cheering loudly and taking pictures. She was present at each of their births and was intimately part of their lives from that day forward. They knew and felt her love each and every day. Bev also served her local parish of St. Anthony's for more than 40 years as a cantor, lector, and lector trainer and coordinator. A visitation will be held Thursday, September 24, from 4-8 PM and Friday, September 25, from 9-10AM at Ertl Funeral Home, 221 Church Street, Watkins (320-764-2800). Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, September 25 at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Watkins. Private family internment.
